Frequently Asked Questions

Foundations of successful piano playing:

Learning to read notes is of utmost importance. Would you not like to learn how to read books instead of always memorising the texts? It is similar with the musical language. The more skill you have, the more fluent and enjoyable the experience of playing will be.

Important elements are notes, rhythms, musical terms and theory, and developing hand coordination (piano is one of the very few instruments where you have to read 2 lines at the same time, and those 2 lines are written in 2 different languages!) How amazing is that for your brain!

Musical styles and genres:

There is so much to explore: from Baroque to Classical, famous hits (maybe you are dreaming of learning that amazing song to wow the guests at your upcoming wedding?), jazz, contemporary pieces, film music, pop song arrangements. Or just name the piece, and I will teach you how to play it (oh, did I mention that I have music for different levels of ability, so if you fancy playing The Moonlight Sonata and you are a beginner, be assured I will have just the right version for you!)

Experience the benefits of music:

In our fast paced life and so much exposure to media and TV, by learning the piano you will be giving your mind (and your soul) a total makeover! You will improve your memory and concentration through learning and memorising music. You will stimulate brain activity, as playing engages both hemispheres of the brain. You will boost your creativity and ability to express your emotions better - playing the piano has a calming effect, helping to alleviate anxiety and stress.

" If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician.

I often think in music. I live my daydream in music.

I see my life in terms of music"

More questions?

Is learning piano online as effective as face to face?

It absolutely is! Imagine all the time wasted in traffic, and with most lessons being only 30 min, it is truly much more convenient and productive to study from the comfort of your own home. Live video connection is extremely effective to navigate all issues relating to technique or musicality.

Can I teach myself by watching YouTube tutorials?

YouTube tutorials can be a wonderful gateway into music, and on my YouTube channel I post incredibly valuable content weekly, addressing issues with technique or how to work on specific pieces. However, nothing can beat a 1:1 approach, where you have your dedicated time with a teacher guiding you and explaining every step of the way. Your journey with personalised lessons will be much quicker and smoother!

Do you accept students from outside the UK?

I currently have students in 6 different countries, and they range from beginners to professional pianists and anything in between.

Will I need to have an instrument at home before starting?

Yes, you will ideally need to purchase an instrument to practise on before starting lessons. These days there are so many options to choose from; from a keyboard, digital piano, acoustic upright piano or a grand piano.

What is the length of a piano lesson, and how frequently do I need to have lessons?

I recommend starting with 30 min lessons once a week, if you are a beginner. If you are an intermediate pianist, 45 min lessons once a week are perfect. Anything above that will require longer lessons, usually ranging between 60-90 min once a week to ensure steady progress.
